How long does structural steel fabrication actually take?

Every builder asks the same question and most fabricators give the same unhelpful answer. Here is what actually drives a steel programme, so you can work out where your job sits.

Before anyone cuts anything

Shop detailing is usually the longest single step and the one most often forgotten in a programme. Turning an engineer's drawings into shop drawings, having them checked, and getting them approved takes as long as it takes — and nothing is cut until it is done. If your programme has fabrication starting the week after award, it is already wrong.

Material availability

Standard sections are usually on the floor or a few days away. Anything unusual — heavy sections, particular grades, long lengths — comes on a mill run or from interstate, and that is a lead time nobody can compress.

Surface treatment

Galvanising is the quiet programme killer. It is a separate trade, in a separate yard, with its own queue, and the steel has to travel there and back. Budget one to two weeks and book it early. Painting in-house is faster but has its own cure times.

What actually shortens a programme

Approved drawings, early. A decision on connections. Confirming surface treatment before fabrication rather than after. And picking a shop with capacity, because a fabricator running three jobs behind will quote you a date they intend to hit and miss it anyway.

Ask the right question

Rather than asking how long it takes, tell the fabricator the date you need it on site. A shop that is straight with you will tell you honestly whether that is achievable and what has to happen for it to be. That answer is worth more than a number on a quote.
